As the third installment in the popular Blood vs. Water series, Japan Triplicate received mixed reviews. Strong players such as Lelouch, Lucy, and Mako were praised, but many castaways were criticized for their unintelligent decisions and unlikable personalities. The season is still remembered for introducing Lelouch, who would go on to become a beloved two-time winner, and also for featuring Lucy's vengeful dominance of the merge after his elimination.

Season Summary[]
The thirty-fifth season of Survivor took place in Japan with its third Blood vs. Water season. Eighteen castaways, each paired with their best friend, were brought to separate islands for "Day 0." The pairs were C.C. & Lelouch Lamperouge, Faye Valentine & Spike Spiegel, Gon Freecs & Killua Zoldyk, Kaede Kayano & Nagisa Shiota, Ken Kaneki & Touka Kirishima, Kousaka Honoka & Yazawa Nico, Kouta & Lucy, Mako Mankanshoku & Ryuko Matoi, and Monkey Luffy & Roronoa Zoro. After day 0, they were split into two tribes. Faye, Gon, Honoka, Kaede, Ken, Lelouch, Lucy, Roronoa, and Ryuko made up Chan while C.C., Killua, Kouta, Luffy, Mako, Nagisa, Nico, Spike, and Touka made up San. Chan won the first reward and chose to send Mako to Exile Island, feeling she was the weakest and could use a potential idol. At the Chan camp, Lelouch took leadership and bonded with Lucy. The others were happy to go along with him, but Roronoa questioned his leadership. On San, the tribe members argued endlessly and could not accomplish anything. When they lost Immunity, the votes were between C.C. and Touka, the two girls that refused to socialize with the others. C.C., Kouta, and Nagisa votes for Touka while the others eliminated C.C. Mako voted for Kouta since nobody told her how to vote. Roronoa was later able to convince Chan to exile his best friend Luffy after a reward win. This worked out for him because Luffy found the Hidden Immunity Idol. When they lost Immunity, Faye contemplated voting out Lucy for being too close to Lelouch. She entrusted Kaede with this information, who then brought it to Lelouch and Lucy. Faye tried to frame Kaede as playing both sides, uniting Gon and Roronoa to vote with her, but Lelouch pulled in Honoka, Kaede, Ken, and Ryuko to eliminate Faye. After a reward win, he sent Spike to Exile Island as an apology. After another loss, Gon was voted out after failing to target the untrustworthy Ken. Once again, Lelouch exiled Killua as an apology.
San won another Immunity, so Roronoa brought in Kaede and Ken to take out weak link Honoka, who also happened to be a close ally of Lelouch's. They could not get the numbers, so Kaede was voted out for being the weakest of the three. The Chan members decided to exile Spike after another reward win, thinking it best to send someone who had already been there. San won yet another Immunity, keeping up the streak. By then, the vote was obvious between Lelouch and Lucy, as they were far too powerful. Lelouch decided to compromise with Roronoa to potentially make an ally out of him. After a long talk, they agreed to vote out weak link Honoka, so they did. They exiled Nagisa as a late apology, then Chan finally won Immunity. Touka chose to target the ones who had been to Exile Island, wanting to split the votes to flush out an idol. Word got around, but Killua wanted to pull a blindside. Wanting to take out someone with a partner still in the game, he convinced Luffy, Mako, Nico, and Spike to vote the threatening Kouta with him. Out of paranoia, Luffy played his idol, but did not receive a single vote. Believing she had convinced everyone to go along with her plan, Touka voted Spike with Nagisa while Kouta was the sole voter for Killua. Kouta was voted out with every other vote.
Ken, Killua, Lelouch, Lucy, Luffy, Mako, Nagisa, Nico, Roronoa, Ryuko, Spike, and Touka merged into the Tokyosaka tribe, named by Nico. Nagisa was quick to find an idol hidden at the beach. Lelouch was the obvious leader of the Chan members, so it took little time for him to become a target. Despite their differences, Killua, Luffy, Mako, Nagisa, Nico, Spike, and Touka agreed to stick together, even if it meant betraying their loved ones. Mako won the first individual Immunity, then a staggering play occurred. The former members of San worked with their loved ones and convinced every single one to vote someone different, even convincing Lucy that the vote was against Luffy while Lelouch was gunning for Ryuko. Ken was convinced to vote Lucy and Roronoa was convinced to vote Killua. This resulted in Lelouch's elimination when every single San member voted for him. This left the Chan members enraged and untrusting of their best friends. Lucy, out for revenge, made it known that she was sticking with her old tribemates by bringing Roronoa and Ryuko on a reward trip. Killua promised to help her out if she exiled him, so she took him up on the offer. She then won Immunity and, keeping his promise, Killua turned the votes against Touka, who he hated. She tried to vote Ken, but everyone went along with Killua and voted her out. Alliances were shattered and new ones formed. Killua and Mako swore to be loyal to Lucy and Ryuko, so when Ken, Lucy, Luffy, Roronoa, and Spike won reward, Lucy convinced them to exile Mako. On Exile Island, she found a Hidden Immunity Idol.
Luffy won Immunity and Killua feared how close he and Roronoa were as the only other pair besides Mako and Ryuko. The two in question tried to vote out the likable under the radar Nagisa, but everyone else voted Roronoa out. Luffy tried to play it cool, taking Lucy, Ken, and Spike on a reward trip to form a potential new alliance with them. He even exiled Ryuko to try and win her and Mako over. However, he was soon approached by Spike with the idea of blindsiding Mako to weaken her and Ryuko. He spread this idea around, so Lucy, Mako, and Ryuko targeted Spike instead. Killua disagreed and wanted to blindside Nagisa, who was becoming a bigger threat to win by the day. He pulled in the majority for the Nagisa vote, but Nagisa played his idol to save himself. Paranoid, Mako played her own idol, but did not receive any votes. Lucy, Mako, and Ryuko's plan fell through and Spike was eliminated with only three votes. Lucy quickly became known as the biggest threat to win the game, but she tried to make amends with Killua by exiling him after she, Ken, Mako, and Nico won reward. Ken won Immunity and Killua gave Lucy one last chance by asking her to vote the underdog Luffy. She went along with it as Luffy targeted her ally Mako, but everyone came together and eliminated him. Lucy had allies, but her name continued to come up during discussions. Despite this, she won Immunity. Everyone stuck together to vote out Nagisa, who voted Mako after claiming she was the true biggest threat to win. When Ken won another Immunity, Lucy became the obvious vote, having played what many considered to be the best game of the final six. Despite her allegiances, Lucy was voted off.
Ken, Killua, Mako, Nico, and Ryuko were left as the final five in the season finale. Killua tried to pull Ken and Nico in to vote out either Mako or Ryuko, who would likely stick together to the end. Even so, Nico saw Killua as the biggest threat to win and figured he needed to go as soon as possible. When Mako won Immunity, Nico went after Killua, but the majority feared that Nico could possibly win with how few enemies she had on the Jury. At the last minute, the final four changed their minds and voted out Nico. Killua, the target, then won Immunity, but Mako and Ryuko refused to vote one another. When Ken decided to gun for him, Killua had to bury his thoughts of splitting the duo and he joined them in eliminating Ken. Knowing the season would end in a final two, Mako and Ryuko chose to bring Killua to the final three, believing he would not be able to win the Final Immunity Challenge. Their gamble proved to be a wise one when Mako won the final Immunity. She happily voted Killua out and brought her partner Ryuko to the final two.
On the last day, Mako and Ryuko reflected on how far they had come. They even noted their similarity to the duo of Sakura and Tomoyo, who dominated the previous Blood vs. Water season. At Final Tribal Council, they both received appreciation from the Jury for their distinctive gameplays. Ryuko was seen as more strategic, but some Jury members noted how her decisions were not always the smartest. Mako, while not hailed as a strategic player, was appreciated for her social game and gameplay decisions. Months later, the Jury votes were read in front of a live audience. Mako was declared the Sole Survivor of Japan Triplicate - Best of Friends.
